21/01/16

What part of the Island is this?

Located in the parish of Grouville in the far east of the Island you’ll find Gorey Village. Rich in history and culture the heart of the village is nestled slightly inland, with houses strung around the coast linking the picturesque harbour. It’s overlooked by the formidable Mont Orguiel (Mount Pride) castle which towers over the harbour and sandy Long Beach.

Interesting fact

During the Nazi occupation all of the properties along the pier had holes smashed in the walls at first floor level connecting them to create one long corridor to move troops and munitions from one end to the other unseen and under cover.

What are the main attractions?

As well as being home to the striking Mont Orgueil Castle and the Royal Jersey Golf Club, Gorey Village has an great selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. The beach is great for winter walks and sunny summer days. For youngsters, the sandy playground has swings with sea views. A date for the diary is Gorey Fete, held annually at the end of August. The event brings the island together on Gorey Pier and hosts a variety of attractions for children and adults with a spectacular firework finale.

Food Glorious Food...

In Gorey village you will be spoilt for choice! Why not start your day by sampling the popular Seascale hotel breakfast, gobble fish & chips from the legendary Entwhistles for lunch, grab a drink at the charming Dolphin pub then end the day in Thailand, eating Thai food at Cafe du Port, tucked away at the end of the pier.

What's the beach Like?

Gorey’s long sandy beach, calm sea and shallow, warm water make it an ideal paddle board and Kayaking spot. The bay is great for low water fishing or rock pooling with a few secret fishing spots behind the castle.

Where are the nearest schools?

For those with young children, Grouville primary school (which also has a nursery) is the closest parish school. The nearest state secondary school is Le Rocquier with the main Colleges under half an hour away.
